1. Choose the vehicle for the route
Start with the terrain, number of travellers, driving licence considerations, service network and the amount of time you expect to spend away from water and power. A larger truck can carry a more capable habitat, but it also affects manoeuvrability, height, shipping and operating cost.

2. Size the camper habitat
Wheelbase alone does not decide the body size. The design team must review rear overhang, departure angle, axle loading, frame movement, spare-wheel position, cab-to-body clearance and the manufacturer’s body-builder guidance. 3. Plan from daily life, not a feature list
Map a normal day inside the camper. Decide where wet shoes go, how two people pass each other, where bedding is stored and whether the bed must remain usable while someone cooks. A permanent island bed is convenient but consumes floor area. A rear lounge gives a large social space and converts for sleeping. Bunks suit families but need careful ventilation and personal storage.
Doors and windows must work with the furniture plan, structural zones and components that can actually be sourced. Confirm window sizes, door clearances and service access with the workshop before approving the layout.
4. Specify power, water and cooling for the climate
Gulf heat changes the electrical calculation. Air conditioning is usually the largest load, while solar output varies with roof area, dust, shading and season. Battery capacity, inverter rating, alternator charging and shore power should be designed together around an expected daily energy budget.
Water capacity depends on people, shower habits and time between services. Tank position matters because water is heavy and changes axle loads as it is consumed. Filtration, drain access, freeze protection for travel outside the region and easy pump maintenance should be considered before cabinetry is fixed.
5. Complete the engineering and approval checks
A visual configuration is the beginning of the project brief. Before fabrication, the exact vehicle needs a physical survey, weight and axle calculations, structural and mounting design, equipment specifications, service clearances, and confirmation of registration or modification requirements.
